You, my friend, are an AWESOME reader!

For my debut post, I'd like to talk about one of the best and most successful reading routines I've ever used.  It's called "Awesome Reader" - and it is... dare I say, AWESOME?

Five years ago, a teacher-friend (Rockstar, Sarah E.) mentioned this idea to me in a 'car pool conversation'.  At the time, she was teaching fourth and reminiscing about her fun days interning in second grade.

She excitedly told me all about 'Awesome Reader': To help build fluency, each day one student would perform a 'read-aloud' to the class.  Once they finished their story the whole class would chant a cheer, praising the student for a job well done! The trick is, of course, that each student is practicing their 'Awesome Reader' book at home -- and since we know that repeated readings are a proven method of building fluency, it was a perfect fit.

I tried it that day (as I often do with brilliant
ideas) - and I was hooked! I don't know where my smarty teacher-friend got this idea from back then, but it is... (I'm going to say it again) AWESOME! (I just can't help myself.)

The kids love it - and so do the parents.  What's more, I have seen massive improvement in my students' reading confidence, their expression while reading, and their LOVE of reading.
Since then I've added organization elements so that the routine can repeat throughout the year, and so that I get maximum benefit from it.

I'd love to hear how it goes in your classroom if you try it!  But seriously, try it.  You'll love it.
It's...
